Questions? We have Answers!

Here are our top tips to keep your house cool and save money on energy during the hotter months:
  • Keep your Air Conditioner Thermostat Set Between 24-26 degrees
You may think you need to turn the air conditioning right down to 20 degrees on hot summer’s days but setting the thermostat somewhere between 24-26 degrees will ensure you keep cool and comfy plus save you money on your energy bill!
  • Clean your Air Conditioner Filters Regularly
If you change the filter in your air conditioner once a month during the hotter months the unit will operate at maximum efficiency, keeping you cooler and saving you on energy usage. Another tip is to keep the outdoor unit shaded, e.g. by plants.
  • Close Blinds and Curtains
Keeping your curtains or blinds closed on a hot day will significantly lower the temperature of the house by reducing the sunlight and heat that would otherwise be streaming through your windows. Blinds or curtains that are white on the reverse side are best at reflecting the sunlight and heat.
  • Change Your Light Bulbs
Yes, you can also reduce the heat in your home by changing your light bulbs! Those standard incandescent light bulbs can actually raise the temperature in a room so switching to LED or CFL bulbs can make a difference.
  • Keep Windows and Doors Tightly Closed
Keep windows and doors tightly closed during the heat of the day. Gaps in windows and doors are a big reason your house may be retaining heat. Repair any gaps in or replace weather stripping around and under windows and doors to combat this problem.
  • Use Ceiling Fans
Use ceiling fans on low in conjunction with your air conditioner. It will circulate the cool air throughout the home and allow you to set the thermostat to a higher temperature thus saving you money on energy consumption.
  • Assess the outside of your home for areas of improvement:
A number of features outside your home can help to create a cooler, more comfortable indoor living environment. Consider, for example:
  • planting shade trees on the east and west sides of the house
  • painting the house and roof a lighter colour
  • installing awnings on “problem” windows
  • Invest in a New High-Efficiency Air Conditioner
If you decide to invest in a modern, high-efficiency air conditioning system ensure you get the right advice about the type and size that best suits your climate and space.
